American singer Will Loomis is seeking damages of at least $150,000 in a case of alleged copyright infringement against singer Jessie J and her record label. According to the Guardian, he claims Jessie J and her co-writers used “substantially similar compositional elements” in the verse of her hit song ‘Domino’. Loomis even posted a YouTube video in which he compares the verse of ‘Domino’ against his own composition ‘Bright Red Chords’ which he wrote in 2008 and released in 2009 with his band Loomis and the Lusts. However this content has since been blocked by YouTube for copyright infringement of UMG’s works.
‘Domino’, spent 25 weeks in the UK top 40, including two weeks at no. 1 and has sold millions of copies. According to Loomis’ Attorney, Chris Arledge “Mr Loomis never consented to the use of his song…and we look forward to obtaining an appropriate remedy from the court for this clear infringement.”
Whatever the outcome of the court case, Loomis and the Lusts will definitely have had more YouTube hits from the UK this week.
