Ian Boxill planned to release six unreleased tracks that himself and Prince had worked on. However, the Prince estate was granted a temporary injunction preventing the release of the tracks shortly before the release date.
The estate stated that in a contract between Prince and Boxill the latter gave the copyright to the former, meaning that Boxill could not do anything with the music without permission.
It has now been reported that the Prince estate has claimed victory in the ongoing dispute, victory is claimed because Boxill has not responded to the suit by the deadline of 23 January 2018. It is also reported that the Prince Estate is proceeding to request that the Judge rules in the Estate’s favour due to the non-response.
If the request is granted by the Judge, the Prince estate will be granted a permanent injunction meaning that Boxill will not be able to ever release the six track EP.
However, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel, well for Prince fans and not Boxill. Troy Carter, the Prince Estate’s advisor explained that:
“[Prince] was a guy who practically lived in a recording studio, and once we started going through [the unreleased material] we really started finding some gems. I heard some music the other night that was pretty mind-blowing and we’re getting some stuff mixed right now. We’ve got great projects in the works that I’m excited to talk about. So the answer is yes, there will be unreleased Prince music coming soon”.
