Unless you have been living under a rock for the last couple of years, Brexit is one of the biggest buzzwords around. Do we proceed to leave the EU on the basis of the referendum of 23 June 2016 where a majority of voters voted to leave, or do we have a second referendum to make sure we still want to leave the EU?
There are a number of campaigns that support the latter option, the second referendum. Notably, the aptly named, the People’s Vote campaign which was launched in April 2018 and have been supporting the notion of a second referendum ever since. Specifically the campaign supports a public vote on the Brexit deal.
The Musicians’ Union, who represents over 30,000 musicians that work across the industry, have recently voted to back the People’s Vote campaign. General Secretary, Horace Trubridge, explained that:
“‘The MU has been anti-Brexit since the referendum was announced as we are deeply concerned about how our members’ livelihoods will be affected…We have been working hard to address concerns such as the impact of freedom of movement ending and the likely introduction of a VISA system…We are supporting the People’s Vote campaign now, because we think our members and other workers should have their say on the final Brexit deal…Given this started with consulting the population when nobody really understood the likely fall out, it seems perfectly reasonable to expect people to get a say on the terms of it.”
The Musicians’ Union is now encouraging its members and all its colleagues in the music industry to sign up to the campaign on the People’s Vote website.
