The Musicians’ Union (‘MU’) has vowed to tackle the BBC’s plans to scrap jobs of various performing groups including its England-based in-house chamber choir, BBC singers and the BBC Symphony.
Following the announcement, the Union who represents more than 30,000 members have stated that it is in ‘urgent talks’ with the BBC in a bid to save job cuts of around 20%.
The BBC claims that the reasoning for the cuts was due to its plan to “invest more widely in the future of choral singing across the UK” adding that it endeavours to form more “agile” groups that can work with an increased number of musicians for more venues.
The MU have taken to twitter to state: “as well as representing affected members and working with the BBC on alternative proposals, the union is urgently calling on MPs to support the union in its fight to save jobs”.
The MU have advised any affected members who wish to speak to the MU to contact their regional office or the Orchestras Department.
