Disney is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over a song in Frozen II, which “can only be explained by copying.”
Artist and songwriter Daniel E Grigson is suing Disney, claiming that the soundtrack song “Some Things Never Change” is a rework of his song “That Girl.” He states that the similarities are so striking that it “can only be explained by copying.”
Providing background for his 1999 release, Grigson states that he has broader work writing music for and with children. While the majority of his releases came through his label Pelican Records, he has additional projects on YouTube and a social media presence.
The writing team behind “Some Things Never Change” is husband and wife songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The Lopezes have publicly admitted to listening to a lot of children’s songs to derive inspiration and watching YouTube videos, the chances of Grigsons song being infringed is high.
Grigson is seeking a formal declaration that states that “Some Things Never Change” is a rip off of his song and that Disney and the Lopezes have infringed his copyright. He has not released the details of the damages he is seeking.
