I’ve mentioned in past blog posts about how Google has been receiving criticism for their supposed lack of action against piracy. I did a bit of research, and apparently the amount of takedown notices Google has received in 2013 has already doubled the amount of notices they received in 2012. In fact, the doubling of takedown notices happened all the way back in July with over a 100 million takedown notices filed. To give you an idea of how much work Google is doing, they handled approximately 1.8 million takedown notices in 2012 between July and October. In the last week of September of 2013 alone they received over 5 million takedown notices. But apparently, according to some people, Google is still not doing enough.
I appreciate the fact that Google, as the largest search engine on the planet, has some responsibility to the public when it comes to combating piracy. But the key word here is they have “some” responsibility, just some, not all. The amount of effort Google is putting into combating piracy is phenomenal. This is especially considering the fact that the link between the rate of piracy and search engines results is largely contested. It’s a shame that instead of being commended for their actions, they are receiving unfair criticism.
