Since starting this blog back in May, a number of different celebrity artists have allegedly infringed copyright. Nicki Minaj, Robin Thicke, and Will.I.AM are just some on those lists.
Okay, if I’m being completely honest…. up until this blog post they were the entire list. But still, three alleged copyright infringements in six months in my opinion isn’t exactly something that can be nonchalantly dismissed (but thats a topic for an entirely different blog post).
Adding his name to this esteemed list is Shawn Carter, popularly known by his stage name “Jay-Z”. Back in 2009, Carter released a track which featured Rihanna as well as the co-producer of the song Kanye West. The track, Run This Town, was a hit and probably one of the bigger successes to come off of Carter’s eleventh studio album The Blueprint III.
Carter, as well as his record label Roc-A-Fella, has been accused of sampling Hook and Single- Part 1 by New Orleans musician Eddie Bo, without Bo’s permission. The song was released in 1969 Bo passed away in 2009, however his record label, TufAmerica, is suing Carter on his behalf.
I took the time to listen to both songs, but I’m having difficulties finding the similarities between the songs. Have a listen, and let us know what you think.
