The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its first hearing on January 24th to address the ‘Ticketmaster debacle.’
Fans have been frustrated for years with Ticketmaster and their monopoly over the live events industry. However, these frustrations came to a boiling point after the disastrous handling of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Era’s Tour.’
Now, the company could possibly face legal action. Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote:
“The issues within America’s ticketing industry were made painfully obvious when Ticketmaster’s website failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to purchase tickets for Taylor Swift’s new tour, but these problems are not new.”
“For too long, consumers have faced high fees, long waits, and website failures, and Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means the company faced inadequate pressure to innovate and improve.”
Ticketmaster controls around 80% of the primary ticketing market across the United States. They also control ticketing for almost every arena or stadium event in the country.
Investigations also found that Ticketmaster have been actively supporting scalpers with little to no regulations on their re-sale market.
