You have to give an industry some credit for thinking outside of the box. The music industry has come up with some very unique ideas in its seemingly never ending battle with piracy, but this new one takes the cake.
UK music, the UK’s largest lobbying group representing the music industry, is releasing a video game app for iOS and Android devices. In the video game, titled Music Inc, the player takes on the role of a music manager. From what I can gather, the main aim of the game is to select an aspiring artist (or artists) and help them reach their fullest potential. This is done by the player choosing the right combination of songwriters, producers, audio technicians, and more for their aspiring artists. Part of the game also includes the player choosing how to distribute the music, and the effect that choosing a specific distribution may have on overall sales or even piracy.
I’m assuming that a major aim of this game is to garner some sympathy for those in the industry- and I’m not sure this is the way to do it. This is not because I doubt the effectiveness of videogames as a median of getting people to relate, but more because I doubt the video game will be designed to be too hard. I have this uneasy feeling that the game is going to be too easy to complete, and instead of garnering sympathy they will become more susceptible to criticism.
The game comes out February this year, and I for one can not wait to review my first video game for this blog.
