If you keep up to date with our Lawdit reading room, you will likely be aware that musician Neil Young filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump after he made use of his music in a campaign, without authorisation. The suit was originally filed back in August after Trump failed to obtain a license for Neil’s songs including “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk”.
However, earlier this week, Young’s legal team filed to dismiss the copyright suit, meaning any claims cannot be renewed. This could potentially suggest the matter has been settled outside of the courtroom, however, neither party has confirmed nor denied this.
Young has voiced out many complaints when it comes to Trump utilising his music for campaigns. Back in 2016, the musician had considered suing Trump for a separate matter regarding unlicensed song use, however, it did not go ahead as the venues at which Trump used the music had reportedly obtained the required licenses. Young is definitely not the first person whose copyright has been breached by Trump and will unlikely be the last. Be sure to keep an eye out on our blog for any further developments on the matter.
