Taylor Swift can now focus on her re-recording of her album 1989, now Plaintiffs have dropped Shake it Off Copyright Infringement lawsuit.
A lawsuit was filed against Swift in 2017 for alleged copyright infringement of lyrics in her 2014 smash hit Shake It Off. Plaintiffs Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who wrote the 2001 track Playas Gon’ Play by the group 3LW. The songwriting duo claim that the lyrics of Shake it Off infringe on Playas Gon’ Play.
US District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald signed the order to dismiss the lawsuit. Swift wrote to the court in August stating that she had never heard the 3LW song and wrote Shake It off based on phrases she had heard when she was younger. She stated that her parents never let her watch MTV and she only listened to country music around the time the song hit its peak. Her attorney also stated that the terms in question were in the public domain.
