Snapchat is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit from the Cooperative Society of Music Authors and Publishers (SUISA.) The organisation represents more than 40,000 songwriters and publishers and has filed action to the Hamburg District Court.
The organisation said that it has repeatedly attempted to licence Snapchat for almost two years and the social media company has allegedly refused to pay for the music it uses.
Snapchat added the option to add music to its platform in 2020, following Instagram’s feature where users can attach snippets of songs to their photos and stories. In Q1 of 2022, Snapchat saw an 18% year-over-year increase in daily users.
Snapchat claims that it does not use any songs from SUISA’s repertoire, which the plaintiff has claimed to be false. They state that a large number of their repertoire is available on Snapchat and is used by users.
However, SUISA digital staff do not have the necessary information to determine how much members are entitled to following this lawsuit.
