Spotify launches a new website

Spotify recently launched a new website, which can be found here, with the aim of informing artists and the general public about their relationship with the music industry. One particular blog post on the website, titled “Spotify Explained” has garnered a lot of interest as of late. The blog post provides a lot of information and statistics on how Spotify contributes to the music industry. One particular piece of information that caught my eye is the fact that 70% of Spotify’s total revenue goes to the rights holders of the music.

While this seems impressive, we know that a majority of the 70% goes to record labels and/or the distributors, while the artists themselves gain only a small portion.

Unsurprisingly, not too many have taken kindly to Spotify’s attempt to win over the public. Not soon after the launch of Spotify’s website, a parody website was launched ridiculing Spotify for their supposed “efforts” in helping the little guys. The overall message of the website is clear: Spotify needs to do more if it wants to be known as the savior of the music industry.
